JULY 25, 2005:  WEST VIRGINIA MEAT FARM

The rabbits that we helped transport came from a "meat" farm in West Virginia.  The conditions there were horrible, as usual, and from what I gathered, the place was closing down.  The rescue people managed to get out one blue Dutch mom with her four babies and six very young baby lops.  I think they may have rescued some other rabbits but I'm not really certain. I know they were having a bunderground in the other direction on Saturday but I'm not sure if the rabbits were from this farm.

We met Christina and Karen just outside of Cumberland MD. We met them at a really nice place that happened to be the entrance to a state park.  It really was a beautiful area.  They had two carriers.  One had a beautiful Dutch bunny and her four babies.  The other had six beautiful lop babies.  The mama bunny seemed very nervous.  Karen said they had lived in unbearable conditions, filthy, no food, water, etc.  She also said this "man" would just pull out a rabbit and kill it right in front of all the other rabbits.  Of course, the rabbits seemed terrorized.  She said this mama bunny was the only adult rabbit who was rescued.

The "man" had killed all the others.  He knew how Karen and Christina loved the rabbits there.  I think they had managed to rescue some before.  He was such a dirty scumbag (sorry) that he showed them the skin of this Dutch rabbit's mate because he knew they cared for this particular rabbit.  The rabbit was very sweet and gentle and would come to the front of the cage for pets.  Anyway these rescued rabbits were adorable.

We continued on our trip to PA, where we met Jane in Pottstown, PA.  She will keep the rabbits with her until Saturday when she is going to MA, the final destination for these buns.  We had met Jane previously when we transported a little Dutch bunny, Sally.

The bunderground went very smoothly, and it is such a wonderful feeling to know that these 11 rabbits will soon be welcomed into loving homes.  It's also a good feeling that the farm they were at has been closed down.

I personally don't understand the concept of "growing" animals to be used as food.  I hope and pray that someday (most certainly not in my lifetime) mankind will be able to survive without killing animals either for food or anything else.  We are big Star Trek fans and I love the idea of a replicator which provides food or drink.  I wish someone would invent this now. In the meantime, I really believe that we could treat the animals humanely.  What bothers me even more than eating animals is their ill treatment.  I don't mean to be on a soapbox, and I don't want to offend anyone.  Maybe we could all just pray for change
to come.
